Amchilini, Choose Me (Chad)
Chadian Arabic and French with English subtitles
In the village of Boutefil, on the edge of the Chadian desert, a severe drought is forcing traditional authorities to revive a custom abandoned for thirty years: the’Amchilini. This ceremony obliges single women to choose a husband in order to ward off misfortunes that befall the community.
But as the tradition resumes, voices are being raised, particularly among young women, who reject what they see as an attack on their freedom and dignity. With sensitivity and nuance, this documentary explores the tensions between tradition, individual aspirations, women's rights, and social change within a rapidly evolving community.
