In 1988, Bernadette tries to reassure her grandson, Fred, who is worried about his imminent death, by telling him that Death no longer exists. The sick old lady will tell him how, in 1927, the inhabitants of the village of Saint-Élie-de-Caxton managed, by incredible towers, to eliminate the great reaper, after a lightning struck the apple tree of the church, suggesting a misfortune.
